This One Acre

A Living Inventory

Friday, August 10, 2018

                          Vanaprastha  - Cultivate gardens

I continue to itemize a growing list of Life-Forms spotted across just my wooded one-acre.  Most of the 200+ plant varieties listed below are locally native, yet many are decreasingly abundant.  I have eradicated or contained many resident non-natives, while propagating, re-locating, and re-placing a variety of historically native species, including planting more than 2,500 native trees and shrubs within 200’ of my home faucet.  (Increasing bio-diversity at every turn is our only true planetary salvation.)

The remainder of the Life-Forms were resident when I purchased this over-looked Eden, sometimes in spite of neglect from previous property owners.  The 100+ animals, of course, come and go as they should.  All these -- both plants and animals -- are my cherished personal neighbors.  This is my living universe.

Needless to say, this project is the most enlightening ‘natural’ exercise I have ever launched.  I have been greatly assisted by my naturalist, botanist and birding friends, native nurseries, Department of Natural Resources, Conservation Districts, Forestry Service, and Conservancies.

I can only imagine all that I am missing on this list.
